FUT FUE
FUT FUE
Advantages of FUE vs. FUT/Strip
FUE
FUT/STRIP
Linear Scarring
FUE does not produce a linear scar. FUE is useful for repairing donor scars left behind by FUT procedures.
Linear Scarring
Strip/FUT procedures leaves a linear scar.
Recovery
Increased healing time in the donor area. Most patients can resume daily activities almost immediately.
Recovery
Most patients are recovered within a couple days at which point, daily activities can resume.
Donor Area Availability
FUE is useful for those with a greater risk of donor scarring and enables harvesting non-scalp hair from the beard or body.
Donor Area Availability
FUT requires strip excision(s) resulting in the Donor area relying solely on the back of the head.
Facial Hair Transplants
Preferred method for beard and eyebrow transplants due to the ability to harvest finer hair from the neck for use in the eyebrows.
Facial Hair Transplants
A beard and eyebrow hair transplant are possible but may result in more limited Donor area options.
Possibility of Potential Discomfort
Very little discomfort is expected from FUE in both the donor and recipient areas.
Possibility of Potential Discomfort
FUT includes potential discomfort, though, it is typically easy to manage and subsides within a couple days.

FUT/STRIP
FUE
Procedure Timing
FUT allows for more grafts per session resulting in much less time required for the procedure.
Procedure Timing
More time is required for FUE due to the order in which the procedure is carried out. Since the extraction process is slower than strip harvesting, large procedures may need to be performed over two days.
Graft Yield
Follicular Units in FUT are harvested from a much greater area of the donor zone compared to FUE resulting in a much higher graft yield and quality.
Graft Yield
The maximum follicular unit graft yield is lower than with FUT. The inability to harvest all the hair from the mid-permanent area donor area results in decreased numbers of grafts.
Subsequent Sessions
Additional FUT sessions are possible. The linear from the original procedure is removed with the next procedure.
Subsequent Sessions
With each subsequent session, the scarring in FUE is additive. If the first session is 2,000 grafts, there will be 2,000 tiny round scars making subsequent FUE procedures more difficult.
Is Shaving required?
No
Is Shaving required?
In larger hair transplant sessions, the entire donor area must be shaved.
Procedure Costs
FUT is relatively inexpensive since it does not require as many sessions as FUE.
Procedure Costs
FUE takes longer than FUT resulting in slightly higher hair transplant costs.
